We recognize that providing shelter is an essential first step in a process. The following six-component program serves to foster stability for the families FESCO serves.
The first step of orientation takes place when the client makes a phone call to FESCO. If the family passes this initial screening, they are invited to come to the Shelter for intake. Following the intake, the family is taken on a tour of the building and shown their room. The staff person on duty introduces the family to the Program Director, who will set an appointment with the family for the following day. The family also meets residents and other staff.
The Program Director conducts an in-depth interview and assessment with the family. Based upon the intake and the assessment, the Program Director and the family design a written Action Plan that meets both individual and family needs. All parties to the design sign the plan; the original is filed in the family's file and a copy is provided for the family.
Each day, the staff reviews progress in carrying out the Action Plan to determine where strong advocacy and/or intervention should occur. Plans may be updated and revised weekly, as necessary. The Program Director and family jointly review the family's activities weekly to ensure that progress is being made at a steady rate.

Throughout a family's stay, FESCO provides many opportunities for residents to learn and share more about a variety of topics. Topics for adults include:
When a family has secured housing and a date for the move is set, the FESCO staff asks the family to make a list of needed furniture and household items. The Resettlement Coordinator meets with the family to ascertain room dimensions and tastes. Then the all-volunteer Resettlement Team selects items that fit the familys needs from the stored items that have been donated, and delivers them to the familys new home. The team keeps a working "wish list" for resettled families, so that missing needed items can be secured from future donations. Resettlement assistance is provided for all FESCO families who manifest their need.
This process begins with completion of the departure form, which includes the forwarding address, the familys evaluation of services, and other pertinent information. Whenever possible, the Program Director holds an exit interview with the family. Even after they have left the Shelter, the former residents continue to be eligible for information and referral to resources, counseling, and other assistance. A phone call is all that is needed to get information. Periodically, FESCO staff contact former residents to learn of their progress and any continuing needs.
FESCO now conducts at least 3 special reunion and support events yearly for our former Shelter residents. These include the following:
With this program, FESCO believes it makes a difference in the lives of families by restoring or facilitating stability that allows each family member to become an effective, productive citizen one who will add strength to the local community.
